How to Make Your Own Backyard Pond
How to Make Your Own Backyard Pond
A backyard water feature can help you get closer to nature. There are endless design possibilities that you can use to create a unique oasis for your entire family.
Choose your location
When you’ve made the decision to build your own water feature, the next step is to choose the best location.
- Sunlight: While it’s not required to place your pond somewhere sunny, it will help increase the chances of your plants thriving if you have at least six hours of sunshine each day.
- Power source: The pump/filter run on electricity. Make sure you are not too far from an electrical source.
- You should choose a location that is easy to access from all sides.
- Underground cables and pipes: You should check with your local utilities to be sure that you are not digging or building on a place where they are located! You shouldn’t place your pond on top of any buried lines and cables.
Select your Size
How big do your ponds need to be? Do you prefer a koi or water garden? Do you plan to add a waterfall or fountain to your garden? For a water garden, the depth must be 18 inches or greater. A koi pool’s depth should be no less than three feet.
Choose your shape
Verify the location of gas and electricity lines before you start digging. Spray paint is used to outline your pond’s shape once they have been properly marked. If you plan to build a waterfall, add elevation to the desired point and allow it to cascade down in accordance with the design.
Start Digging
Although small ponds can be excavated manually, larger ponds will require professional assistance. You can add shelves to the sides of your pond for more dimension and different types if you wish. After digging is done, line the hole with sand. Then, rake the surface to smoothen it.
Insert Your Liner
The smooth side of the liner should be facing down. The textured side should face up. Make sure that the liner reaches into every corner and crevice. The liner should be smoothed to avoid creases and loose fitting. Anchor it in place using stones.
Install your Equipment
Install the water pump, filter, and skimmer. It is important to hire a licensed electrician to install an outdoor outlet that is GFCI protected in order for electrical equipment to be safe. You should fill the pond bottom with rocks, gravel, and boulders.
Add Water
Fill the pond to the required level. Allow the water to sit for 24 hrs before adding a dechlorinating agent. To avoid any damage to fish or plants, make sure you follow all label directions for any chemical that is used in your pond.
Accessorize
You should wait at least 2 weeks before you add fish to your pond.
